1. License Validity & Calibration Window

  • Your Q Grader License is valid for 36 months (3 years) from the date of certification or your last calibration.

  • To maintain the license, you must successfully calibrate within a 12-month window:

    • 6 months before and 6 months after your license expiration date.

  • If you fail to calibrate within this window, your license will expire and you’ll lose your active Q Grader status.

2. Calibration Overview

  • The Q Calibration is a 1-day test designed to ensure Q Graders maintain consistent cupping performance with CQI standards.

  • You must participate in 3 cupping sessions, each with 6 coffee samples, from 3 different categories.

🎯 Passing Requirements:

  • Pass at least two out of the three cupping tables.

  • Demonstrate proper identification of defects and accurate descriptors in alignment with calibrated SCA protocol.

  • Participants who pass are renewed for another 36 months.

3. If You Don’t Pass the Calibration

  • You are allowed ONE RETAKE of the calibration within your 12-month calibration window. (also pay the Calibration Fee again)

  • If you fail the retake, you are required to take the Q Grader Recertification Course.

4. Q Grader Recertification Course

If you fail both calibrations or your license has lapsed:

  • You must take the Q Recertification Course, which includes the following exams:

    • Sensory Skills Test

    • Three Cupping Skills Tests (Washed Milds, African/Asian, Naturals)

    • Triangulation Skills Test

    • Olfactory Skills Test

    • Matching Pairs Test

  • You must pass all these components to regain your active Q status.

  • You have a maximum of 2 years from your license expiration to take the Recertification Course.

  • If your license has expired for more than 5 years, you must retake the full Q Grader course.

5. Important Tips & Reminders

  • Plan: Check your license expiration date and schedule calibration early within your 12-month window.

  • Calibration sessions are only hosted by CQI-approved instructors and training centers (e.g., HQJ Coffee School).

  • Stay cupping fit: Regularly practice using the official cupping forms and protocols to maintain sensory sharpness.

  • Keep records: You can check your license status and expiry date via the CQI Grader Database.
